The Bible's First Prophecy
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. (Genesis 1)
The Bible stands alone in the world as a unique set of sacred writings. One of the things that makes it truly unique is the amazing collection of predictions about the future. Thousands of them are attributed to the Creator of the Universe, who alone knows the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10).
(That includes your beginnings and endings, by the way.)

Predictive prophecy is found in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. The Bible’s prophecies deal with many different subjects: the history of the Jewish people, the outcomes for individuals, and geopolitics (ancient and future).
Logically, we know there had to be a beginning even for prophecies and it is no coincidence that they begin in Genesis, the Book of Beginnings.
In the distant past, we hear the very first prophecy…God predicts that He will simply speak Light into existence. The genesis of Earth was a watery chaos, dark and yet under the direction of the Lord Himself. Imagine what it must have been like: swirling rock and soil washed along with another new creation, water. We’ll explore the earth’s beginnings plenty on this site, but for now, we assume that Genesis gives an accurate picture of early history.
The Bible tells us that God Himself is Light, but into this scene He brought light so that humans could see the beautiful world He had created.
This is what happened in the physical world.
Now let’s think about all this metaphorically.
I said earlier that your own life is bound-up in this first prophecy. Why? As we constantly say, the peace you crave in your chaotic, swirling life is found in the person of Jesus Christ.
In the New Testament, John 8:12, we read the words of Jesus:
“Again, Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”
In Colossians 1:16-17, we read about Jesus as Creator:
“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
Again, if your life is in darkness—for whatever reason—call on Jesus. He will hear you and ease your burdens.
He has predicted He will love you and help you. All His predictions come true.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
